8
climbers per departure at most, one guide for every four people
71
percent of 2025 climbers reached Mahameru, the rest stopped at Kelik or Kalimati

Eight places, and why the number is not raised
How one departure runs
Booking and papers, 14 days out
Identity card, a health certificate from a clinic, and a Rp500,000 deposit. We handle the park permit, and the national park quota fills eleven days before the date on average.
Weather call, 2 days out
We read the national forecast and telephone the ranger at Ranu Pani. Cancellation is decided at this point, and your money comes back in full or moves to another date.
Meeting in Tumpang, the night before
19.00 at the office on Jalan Raya Tumpang. Kit is checked item by item, and anything missing can be hired on the spot. Anyone without a windproof jacket does not leave with us.
Day one, 08.00 from Ranu Pani
Four hours forty minutes to Ranu Kumbolo via Watu Rejeng. Tents are up before 14.00 so there is still sun to dry things out.
Summit, midnight from Kalimati
Leaving at 00.00, three and a half hours from Kelik to Mahameru. The turnaround time is 07.00 whatever the circumstances, because the wind and the gas usually rise after that.
Down, and the rubbish is weighed
Back at Ranu Pani by 14.30 on day three. The group's rubbish is weighed at the post, and the Rp150,000 deposit comes back if it matches what went up.
What is included, and what is not
Written out in full so nothing is added on the mountain.
Included: transport and permits
The jeep from Tumpang to Ranu Pani and back, the national park permit, three days of travel insurance, and the entry ticket. All of it in your name, not the group's.
Included: sleeping and eating
A four person tent shared between two, a mat, six hot meals and two snacks. Water is drawn from Ranu Kumbolo and filtered rather than carried up.
Included: guides and group porter
One certified guide for every four people, and one porter carrying the tents and shared supplies. Your own pack stays on your own back.
Not included: personal kit
Boots, a windproof jacket, a sleeping bag and a pack. All of it can be hired at our office: boots Rp75,000, jacket Rp60,000, sleeping bag Rp50,000 for three days.
Not included: getting to Malang
Your train or flight to Malang, and a bed the night before. We do not collect from Surabaya, because it is three hours away and it once made us late into the post.
What we do not promise
There is no guarantee of a summit. In 2025, 71 percent of climbers reached Mahameru. If the park restricts climbing at Kalimati, the trip stops there and the price drops by Rp150,000.
They turned us back from Kelik at five in the morning and I was angry at the time. Two hours later the wind up there was genuinely fierce.Dimas, Semeru August 2025
My trip was cancelled two days out and the money came back in full within three days, without my having to chase it.Larasati, Semeru February 2026
My kit was checked item by item the night before and my sandals were refused. They were right, the rock at Arcopodo is not for sandals.Yoga, Semeru October 2025
The guide walks at the back, not the front. I was the slowest and never once felt left behind.Anita, Ranu Kumbolo May 2026
What people ask before booking
Do I need to train?
You do. We ask for 10 kilometres of walking without a long stop, three times a week for a month. People who skip it usually stop at Cemoro Kandang.
What happens in bad weather?
If the forecast shows two days of heavy rain or wind above 40 kilometres an hour at altitude, we cancel two days out. Since 2019 that has happened 37 times in 128 departures.
Do I get my money back?
In full if we cancel. If you cancel, fourteen days out is a full refund, seven days out is half, and below that nothing, because the permit and the jeep are already paid.
What if I cannot go on?
From Ranu Kumbolo and Kalimati you can walk down with one guide at no extra cost. From above Arcopodo the descent takes longer than the climb, and we say so before we leave.
Signal and power?
There is signal at Ranu Pani and parts of Ranu Kumbolo, and none from Cemoro Kandang onward. There is no power, so bring your own battery pack because we do not supply them.
What ages can come?
Fifteen to sixty for Semeru, with a health certificate. Above fifty five we also ask for an electrocardiogram no older than six months.
